Farmhouse in Adena, Ohio
Oil on Canvas 22 x 36 Commission
This farmhouse in Adena, Ohio was commissioned by the current owner. It dates back to 1816 and was part of the "underground railroad," pre-Civil War. A small room off the basement, with a low ceiling and benches, was where the runaway slaves hid. My idea with the piece was to get the feeling of sunlight on the side, with indications of Fall coming on. The current owner would also like me to paint another from photos he has dating back to the early 1910s. He currently raises cattle on the property. With projects like this, I get lost in the research. Most people know the big stories regarding the formation of our country, but there are thousands of nuanced ones across all of our states, with thousands of individuals involved, who played critical roles.
